  Title:   Mania Increases Brain Complexity: A Quantitative EEG Analysis

  Abstract:
Cver the past century, it has been implicitly maintained in the literature of psychiatry that EEG signal contains potentially valuable (though not very easy to extract) information about mentally ill patients. These hopes have been strongly renewed along with the development of computerized, quantitative EEG recording techniques. In order to look for any clue(s) pointing to abnormalities in EEG power spectrum and/or any form of laterality between the two hemispheres, we computed EEg power spectra by applying a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to EEg data obtained from 29 cases of BMD type I who were experiencing a manic episode and compared them to 17 normal EEGs. A symmetric, non-lateralized significant increase in signal amplitude was shown for patients in #946; frequency bandwidth. In the delta bandwidth however, signal amplitude was shown to increase from left hemisphere to midline to right hemisphere in patients. In combination with earlier findings (35), we conclude that our findings indicate the importance of increased neuronal activity in multiple, asynchronous cell assemblies in the right hemisphere during the manic episode.
